This Week in Raiding…. again…

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

I forgot to post this yesterday… probably because I’m getting tired of writing this same thing over and over each week.  Naxx. Sarth+3 attempts.  No success.

Tuesday – Naxx.  No attempt at immortal, had deaths on the very first boss.  Went pretty smoothly, got everything but 4H, Sapph and Kel down.

Wednesday – Bit of guild drama, followed by about 12 Sarth+3 attempts.  The attempts were good, but we’re just missing… something.  I think a couple of our healers need some help.  We have some great ones, but one in particular died to many fissures.  Other than him though, we really had almost no fissure or flame wall deaths, which is a huge improvement!  I really think we can get this down if we get lucky and things just go our way.  Eventually, the DC monster aggro’d and we had to switch to Naxx.  [Journey's End]!  I’m the 4th and last hunter to grab it in our raid.  Horsey!  Tigerfeet, it’s all yours now! :)

Thursday – Started with Malygos, which took us a couple of attempts… we lost a ton of people in phase 2, which was strange… but after that, we got him down.  BTW, I recommend the mod MalygosCP for helping out with that fight.  It helps track your energy, combo points and stacks.  Finally, after 2 weeks of the quest burning a whole in my quest log, I picked up my [Favor of the Dragon Queen]!

We then had enough people to make a few more attempts on 3D.  More of the same… very good, but just not good enough.  We took down 2D and called it a night.

This Week in Raiding… An Old Challenge Made New

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

This week was a strange week for Unemployed.  Some of our raid members decided to take much needed breaks, and this is a good time for it.  We worked our butts off on Sarth last week, and we all need to take some time to work on our strategies and practice our skills.

So we went to 10-mans, both for achievements and to observe and pinpoint any problems we might be having.

Since I’m 100% perfect, I felt like I didn’t need to go.  ;)   Just kidding.  I’m working 10 hour days at work right now, and I was hoping to sit out if possible because I need time to take care of myself.  So I got to take a bit of a break on Tuesday.  However, there was a family issue with someone and I promptly hopped in to take his place!

We worked on 10-man Naxx.  It was good to be part of a 10-man.  You feel like your actions matter more, and my DPS doesn’t get pushed down to 9th place because of all the Warlocks and Shadow Priests!

We had a second group working on Sarth+3 (10-man).  I do not envy that group… I can just imagine how stressful it got.  That fight is CRAZY and I think I’d be scared to even give it a try!

We bumped back up to 25-mans for Wednesday night, trying to work on Dedicated Few and the other sub-21 people achievements.  We started with Sarth.  With 18 people.  Only 2 healers.

HUGE props to the healers!  We got Sarth down in one shot, they did an excellent job keeping us all alive.

I was going to go into how I lost a roll for a piece of loot I felt would have been very appropriate for me, but I don’t want to whine about it.  I just wish we could settle on a system for doing loot council finally.

So we only managed to take down 2 of the bosses in the Construct quarter due to needing to bring in some extra heals, lots of DC’s and shuffling people around.  It’s amazing how long the fights get when you’re down to 18 people!

Thaddius gave us some trouble.  We tried working on Shocking since we had less people to cross polarizations, but that just wasn’t quite happening.  In hindsight, we probably should have just focussed on high DPS rather than avoiding damage since your numbers were so low.  But it was good practice either way.

And it was amazing to see how much better we did with only 18 people than our first few weeks with 25.  We’ve all really grown and improved!

Thursday night was more Naxx sub-21.  We kept a full group of 19 and cleared through all of Spider as well as killing Razuvious.

We had a few more tries at Thaddius, but the DPS just wasn’t enough to get him down before the enrage.  We also tried Gothikk, but we didn’t properly distribute the groups and we also pulled a Shade from the next room or something… I dunno, I was kinda sleeping. :)

But if you’ve got a group and you’re tired of just breezing through Naxx, go ahead and give it a try with less than 20 people.  It’s a real challenge and it will remind you of your first days clearing through!

Achievements: The New Progression

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

The officers of Unemployed had a little meeting last night, and discussed things along the lines of raid morale and attitude and such.  One part of the discussion got me really thinking.

It’s taken me a while to come to terms with the fact that with Wrath of the Lich King, the goals of a raider must change.  My goal can no longer be to work my way week by week through a dungeon, hoping to someday take down the big bad guy at the end.  I’ve taken down all the big bad guys that are available to me, and I’ve had them down a number of times already.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve “beaten the game”.  Yes, there are fewer boss encounters and raid dungeons to see than there were in Burning Crusade or Vanilla.

But achievements are the new encounters.

And this is something that many raiders need to be convinced of, including me.  I may not like it, but it’s the way it is.

Now, people who are playing this game to challenge themselves, rather than because they are fans of the lore and design, would probably have a much easier time coming to grips with this concept.

However, from a lore perspective, it was a lot more compelling to be working towards some big head honcho and killing his lackeys along the way.  To work towards that moment when you finally, after weeks of work, take that evil man/dragon/demon down and teach him a lesson!

There’s no lore-based reason to take Sartharion down with his drakes up.  Whether we walk in there and take the drakes down first, or leave them up, we’re still walking out of there with a dragon and 3 drakes lying on the floor.  And I feel this is one reason why people are having a hard time trying to see what is left for them to see and do in raiding.

I understood their goal with this expansion was to allow everyone to see all of the content rather than restricting it to the top few percentages who had the right combination of skill, time and coordination.  I always thought that they tried to do this with their 10- and 25-man versions of all raids, and I felt it wasn’t working properly because most of the 10- and 25-man fights are identical, you just have more/less people to worry about.

But I was wrong.  The way they’ve allowed everyone to see the content, yet still give something for hardcore players to work towards is through “hard modes”, achievements.

Achievements are usually thought of optional fun little things that you can do as a bit of a challenge to yourself, or as some way to get yourself a shiny new mount.  And some of them are exactly that!  There are many players who just aren’t interested in optional fun little things or new mounts, they want to raid, see new content and to play the game for what they’ve always enjoyed.

But what they fail to see is that encounters like Sartharion with drakes up are not just optional fun ways of changing a fight – they are completely new encounters in themselves.

From a Raid/Guild leader perspective, it’s MUCH more difficult to motivate people to want to kill a boss they’ve already killed just to do it with more difficulty, with some sort of handicap.  This is a froward challenge that all leaders must be prepared to work through, and it’s something we’re dealing with right now.

When a progression guild is recruiting, they say up front if they’ve done 3D, or 2D or 1D.  They don’t just say they’ve killed Sarth (unless, well, they’ve only killed Sarth).

This is because it’s not about just getting a new mount, it’s about the challenge.  It’s about the skill.  The different in difficulty from killing Sartharion to killing Sartharion with all three drakes grows exponentially, and those who are able to get 3D down have what it takes.

And it seems with Ulduar, this will continue as the norm.  You might blow through all of the new raid within the first couple of weeks of the patch release, but you’ll then need to spend months working on getting the “hard mode” achievements.

Like I’ve said, I don’t like it.  But I’ve come to understand that it’s the way things are going to be now.

That might change when Icecrown Citadel comes along and the majority of raiding guild have Arthas down in the first few weeks, and just spend the rest of the game trying to see if they can all do it with their hands tied behind their backs…

But for now, I can accept it.

Unemployed Event: Tier 5 Champions!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Last night, about 13 members of Unemployed set out to conquer the two bosses which barely eluded us in our BC raiding days… Kael’thas and Lady Vashj!  We also took out Lurker for good measure.

ssc_tk

We weren’t sure we’d be able to manage, because when I formed the group, we had a whole 1 tank and 2 healers.  But our ret paladin offered to respec protection and we found a 3rd healer.

Most of us had never taken Vashj down, and those who did hadn’t done it in quite some time, so our explanation of the fight was still a bit fuzzy.  We forgot to assign someone to kite the Striders so there were fears going off everywhere.  I had also forgotten to set it to Free-for-All before hand so people could loot the Cores.  But we survived and off we went to TK: The Eye.

Here we skipped straight to Kael’thas.  This was a messy fight, and we lost several people.  We couldn’t be bothered to look up what each of the advisors did so we just tanked ‘em.  When Kael went crazy at the end and we started floating in the air, we lost even more people.  But we got him down and…

[Ashes of A'lar]!

So, according to my Kael’thas record… the drop rate on that baby is 100%.  We all rolled on it, and of course my rolling luck landed me with a nice 2.

But congrats to Anduena, our warlock!  It’s her birthday on Tuesday, so I’m glad she could get a pretty sweet birthday present from the guild!

After TK, we still had some time so we ventured into Black Temple.  This place isn’t cake even at 80, in fact even the trash was a bit froward.  We didn’t have time to make it all the way to Illidan… but we’re coming for him next time!

First Impressions: Raiding as MM

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Last night I headed into Naxx donning my shiny new 13/53/7 spec.

I’d only tested it out briefly, a few minutes with the Target Dummy in Silvermoon (no one else ever uses the ones in Silvermoon!) and then a short romp through Heroic Violet Hold this weekend.

My overall impression from the raid?  MM is fun, but sometimes watching all the cooldowns feels like it’s just busywork.  But I think I’ve found my temporary happy medium between the horrible DPS of Beast Mastery and the unbearable clunkiness of Survival, so I’ll probably stick it out at least until 3.1 hits.

When the raid started, I was… a bit lost.  I am still new to this, and I’ve had to move my buttons around.  “Where’s Volley?!” I found myself panicking.  I couldn’t remember what the icon even looked like, I just knew it was always ’6′.  Well, now it’s ‘Alt-2′ apparently.

The first thing I noticed was my Volleys were critting SO much.  I check my character sheet… I’m up to nearly 47% crit while raid buffed… holy crap!  I’m sitting at 36% unbuffed, which is a lot more than my 30% in BM.  Crits are shiny.

The second thing I noticed was on our first boss fight – we started with Military, and we were fighting Instructor Razuvious.  About 30 seconds into the fight, I glance at my mana bar.  I’d used only a scintilla of mana, sitting at 92%!  CRAP!  I forgot to take Viper off again! I thought to myself.  But I check and double check, and I’m most definitely rocking the Dragonhawk.

Even with just 2 points in Efficiency and 1 point in Rapid Recuperation, I don’t think I dropped below 50% mana on any fight.

/melt.

Things I’ve learned:  I need to bind Readiness to a key somewhere.  I have all my cooldowns bound to mouse buttons, except for that one.  I wonder if I can find another button on my mouse that I’m not using…

I also need to pay more attention to when I need to use Aimed and when to use Multi.  I try to switch between them depending on how many mobs I’m fighting, but sometimes I just hit one without paying attention.

I’m glad I’ve decided to try this spec out, though!  And I was happy to see myself hit 3rd on DPS for one of the boss fights :) It’s no 1st place ZOMG OP BM, but it’ll do!
