Achievement Guide: Lovin’ Squirrels and Killin’ Snakes.

Disclaimer: This post was accurate as of patch 3.0.9.

This guide is actually for THREE achievements!  Alright, so they aren’t huge achievements.  You don’t get a snazzy award.  They are just simple, and slightly time consuming.  Yay!

This will help you to complete To All The Squirrels I’ve Loved Before, To All The Squirrels Who Shared My Life, and Pest Control by going to the fewest (and the least annoying) locations possible.  Now, if you’ve already done one of the achievements or you have a spattering of them… feel free to change it up a bit.  But I’ve outlined the places you absolutely have to go, and the places where you have some options.  This isn’t the complete list of all locations, I’ve cut out the ones you really won’t need to bother with, even if you can still find the critters there.

It’s quite a long list… be prepared!

Achievement Guide: [World Explorer]

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Disclaimer: This post was accurate as of patch 3.0.9.

How can I write a guide about an achievement like [World Explorer]?  It’s a pretty simple concept, just ride/fly around and discover all the areas.

Well, this isn’t so much a guide as it is a hand pointing you to a pretty helpful resource, in case you haven’t found it yourself already:

This site has maps of every zone including the subzones which are required for the achievements!  It also has both a compiled “satellite view” map along with the regular in-game maps.

I found it when I was doing my own Explorer achievements, when I simply couldn’t figure out where some small zone was.

So, if you haven’t done this achievement yet and you don’t feel like running around a zone searching aimlessly for that last scintilla of the zone you have yet to discover… check this site out!

Edit:  A few addons which highlight unexplored areas of your map have been pointed out to me.  If you’re the type to rather keep all your stuff in your game and not have to deal with a browser while you play, these addons might be for you:

Achievement Guide: A Fool for Love! <3

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Disclaimer: This post was accurate as of patch 3.0.9.

To get most of these achievements, you need to know the basics of the Love is in the Air event.  Here are the key steps to mastering the event:

  1. Buy [Perfume Bottle] or [Cologne Bottle] and a ton of [Love Token] from an innkeeper in a major (old world) city.
  2. Put on some Cologne or Perfume.  With Perfume, you can interact with male NPCs, with Cologne, you can interact with females.
  3. While wearing Cologne or Perfume, talk to NPCs to get [Pledge of Adoration: {Cityname}] from City Guards and [Gift of Adoration: {Cityname}] from any other NPCs.
  4. When you’ve gotten an Adoration gift, you’ll receive the debuff called [Adored], and you cannot receive another Adoration gift/pledge for an hour.  However, you can continue to talk to NPCs and receive [Pledge of Friendship: {Cityname}] and [Gift of Friendship: {Cityname}].
  5. You may also receive a debuff called [Heartbroken] which lasts for 1 hour (of game time, logging out pauses the timer!) To get rid of this debuff so you can continue getting gifts, find someone who is willing to mend your heart.  Large cities should have lots of people willing to do this.
  6. Friendship and Adoration Gifts/Pledges contain an “item”.  Each city has 3 “items” to collect. Pledges of Loyalty and Cards are only available from City Guards the third item is only available from non-guards.
  7. When you collect 5 of an item, you can combine them.
  8. When you have done this for each of the 3 items, you can combine those to create a [{Cityname} Gift Collection].
  9. When you’ve done this for all 3 major cities, you can combine them to create a [Horde Gift Collection] or [Alliance Gift Collection].
  10. Take this faction gift to a Peddlefoot NPC standing near your favourite faction leader (Thrall, for example!) and turn in the quest [Gift Giving] (Horde/Alliance) .  You’ll to choose a reward and you’ll also get a [Box of Chocolates].
  11. Repeat until all achievements are completed!

Now that you know how most of the event works, here are the specifics of the achievements!

[Heartmender] Mend 20 broken hearts with Unbestowed Friendship Bracelets.

Occasionally your Adoration Gifts/Pledges will contain [Unbestowed Friendship Bracelets].  These are used to remove the Heartbroken debuff from other players.  My advice when you are looking to use some of your Bracelets is to stand in the middle of a city and wait for people to ask to be mended, or watch people as they come by and check for the debuff.

[Flirt With Disaster] Get completely smashed, put on your best perfume, throw a handful of rose petals on Jeremiah Payson (Horde)/Sraaz (Alliance) and then kiss him. You’ll regret it in the morning.

If you have a [Bouquet of Red Roses], you can use this for your petals, but the [Bouquet of Ebon Roses] will not work.  If you don’t have one, you can use [Handful of Rose Petals] which can be found in Adoration Gifts/Pledges or received as a reward from the Gift Giving quest.

  1. Make sure you are wearing perfume (not cologne!)
  2. Bring enough alcohol to get you good and smashed.
  3. /kiss, and then use your Pedals on him.

Sraaz is a gnome who wanders around the Great Forge in Ironforge selling pies, and Jeremiah Payson is the cockroach vendor in Undercity.

EDIT: There is NO alcohol vendor in Undercity.  So you will have to bring some with you from another city, or use a [Brewfest Pony Keg] if you’ve got one!

[Nearest and Dearest] Complete the Love is in the Air storyline quest beginning with the Dangerous Love quest.

[Dangerous Love (Horde)] starts in Undercity near the bank or [Dangerous Love (Alliance)] starts in Stormwind.  The quest line is pretty easy, mostly just running around and talking to people.  Make sure you click the cauldron at the end, or you won’t get the achievement!

[Nation of Adoration] Obtain a Gift of Adoration from each of the cities listed below.

The cities for each side are the three major old world cities.

In Step 3 of my list above, you must talk to the non-guard NPCs to receive a Gift of Adoration for the achievement.  This can only be done once an hour, so it will take you 3 hours to get these.

[Sweet Tooth] Sample the Love is in the Air candies listed below.

[Box of Chocolates] can be a reward from the Adoration Gifts/Pledges, and you will also receive one each time you complete Gift Giving.  It will contain some (if not all) of the candies needed!  They have some pretty nice buffs… bring them along to raids!

[My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose] Obtain a Bouquet of Red or Ebon Roses during the Love is in the Air celebration.

The [Bouquet of Red Roses] is NO LONGER AVAILABLE.  If you have it from a previous year… great!  Otherwise, you’ll need to kill one of these bosses in Northrend to get [Bouquet of Ebon Roses].  Normal and heroic modes both work.

  • Maiden of Grief (Halls of Stone)
  • Prince Keleseth (Utgarde Keep)
  • Prince Taldaram (Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom)

[Shafted!] Shoot 10 players with the Silver Shafted Arrow.

[Silver Shafted Arrow] is a possible reward from Adoration Gifts/Pledges, and you can also get 5 from the Gift Giving quest.  Here’s a little trick though: you only need ONE arrow to finish this!  If you interrupt the casting on the arrow, it’ll still count, but will not use the arrow.

[Lonely?] Join someone in Dalaran at their Romantic Picnic during the Love is in the Air celebration.

[Romantic Picnic Basket] is a rare reward from a Adoration Plege or Gift.  When you or someone else uses it, it’ll set up a little picnic tent.  if you don’t have one, hang around in Dalaran for a while, and someone will surely set one up!  Just click on the little basket that’s on the floor to sit, and hope someone will join you.

[The Rocket's Pink Glare] Shoot off 10 Love Rockets in 20 seconds or less.

[Love Rocket] can be a reward from Adoration Gift/Pledges and also a reward from Gift Giving.  I advise you to put it on your action bar temporarily when you get enough of them, because these rockets require you to target an area.  This way you can use a keybinding to make sure you do it quick enough!

[Fistful of Love] Use a Handful of Rose Petals on each of the race/class combinations listed below.

  • Gnome Warlock
  • Night Elf Priest
  • Tauren Druid
  • Undead Warrior
  • Draenei Paladin
  • Human Death Knight
  • Orc Shaman
  • Troll Rogue
  • Blood Elf Mage
  • Dwarf Hunter

[Handful of Rose Petals] can be a reward from Adoration Gift/Pledges and also a reward from Gift Giving.  Hang around in Dalaran and keep an eye open for these race/class combinations.  If you’re looking for someone in your own faction, you can query to see if there are any around and maybe whisper them to meet up.  For example, “/who Troll Rogue Dalaran” will list all Troll Rogues in Dalaran!

[Be Mine!] Use the Bag of Candies to create each of the hearts listed below.

The [Bag of Candies] can be a bit tough to get your hands on. Like the Love Fool or Romantic Picnic,  the only way to get it is a chance from a Gift/Pledge of Adoration.  However, you must use your own to complete this, you cannot share your Bag of Candies with anyone else.  It will create little candies with cute sayings, and these can be traded – however, trading them will not count towards the achievement – you must actually create them yourself!

[I Pitied The Fool] Pity the Love Fool in the locations specified below.

The [Love Fool] can be received from a Gift/Pledge of Adoration.  However, you don’t have to use your own Love Fool – if someone else has one you can /pity on it just the same.  Also, you can still get the achievement if you use it on the remains of the fool, after it’s exploded!

Congrats!  With just a lot hourly gift getting, you should hopefully be a Love Fool with hardly any effort!

Fun Guild Events 5: Cooking Contest

Cooking Contest/Bake-Off

This is an idea I haven’t tried yet, but am hoping to soon.

It’s a two-parter, and can be split up if you’d rather only do one part.  There is an in-game component and an out-of-game component.

The in-game part is the “Bake-Off”.  It’s pretty simple, and not really a contest, but more a group effort thing to help everyone out.  The idea is to help people work on their Cooking Achievements.  Each person involved will be required to farm a specific mat, like Rhino Meat or Small Eggs.  Then everyone will come together and mats will be distributed so everyone will have what they need to cook recipes they haven’t cooked yet (for the Northrend Gourmet or Cake achievements, for example).

The out-of-game part is to have those who are cooking-inclined to cook up a real meal/drink/snack that represents some in-game food, like Rhino Dogs, Dragonbreath Chilli, etc.  They’ll need to post a real recipe and try to relate it to the in-game ingredients.  Votes are made based on taste (for those who decide to try to make them) and creativity.

Example: I have yet to try these, but I am sure that because so many members of Unemployed are big fans of cooking, we’ll at least be able to pull off the second part with lots of interest.  I’ll let you know how it goes!

Achievement Guide: Shop Smart, Shop Pet… Smart!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Disclaimer: This post was accurate as of patch 3.2.

This is a guide for the set of achievements for mini-pets:

As a hunter, a Beast Master hunter at that, pets are very important to me.  And while companion pets won’t fight by my side, I still do like those cute little guys!

However, I never went out of my way to get a lot of pets.  Probably because my bag space was valuable to me, and I didn’t want to waste it.

But now that isn’t an issue, and with a nice reward like [Reeking Pet Carrier], there’s nothing stopping me from finding myself 50 little companions!

Here’s a list of all the companions in order of difficulty to obtain (assuming gold isn’t difficult to come by).   I’ve bolded my companions in the list below, in case you are curious.

Let’s start with Vendor and Crafted BoE pets.  Everyone can get these.  Getting the pets from the opposite faction might be difficult if you don’t have any friends on the other side, or aren’t on a PvE server.  However, they ARE BoE so can be learned by either faction.

If you are planning on picking them up yourself and using the neutral Auction House, keep in mind that you cannot buy from your own account on the neutral AH.  You will need a middle man – someone you can trust.

Vendor (Both Factions)

Vendor (Horde)

Vendor (Alliance)

Quest Rewards

If you have already done the quest and have destroyed the item, the quest giver should be able to give you a new one.

  • [Sprite Darter Egg] (Feralas, Alliance Only – Drop for Horde)
  • [Chicken Egg] (Westfall)
    • While the quest can only be completed by Alliance, Horde can pick up the egg from the ground when the quest is completed.  Just need co-operation with someone of the opposite faction.
  • [Mechanical Chicken] (Stranglethorn Vale)
    • This requires you to complete the 3 OOX quests first.  If you are unsure about which of the 3 you have completed, a GM will tell you if you petition them.  This is also BoE, so it’s possible to find on the AH or trade it.
  • [Miniwing] (Terokkar Forest)
  • [Smolderweb Carrier] (Blackrock Spire)
  • [Worg Carrier] (Blackrock Spire)

Most of these can be found on the Auction House, but be prepared to pay a hefty sum.  The price ranges vary significantly, so you might get lucky, but don’t count on it.

You’re gonna need to be an Engineer or Fisherman to get these.

Achievement Reward

Only available during a certain time of year, some of them are drops, some are easily purchased and some are quest based.

Argent Tournament

All pets available through seals are BoE and can be traded.

Past Events

These are no longer available (not on the AH or eBay).

Out of Game Special

Possibly available on eBay if you’ve got lots of RL gold!
