This Week in Raiding…

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Unfortunately I wasn’t there for Tuesday night’s raid… got sucked into going to see Up again with some friends!  (If you haven’t seen that movie, you should!  It’s great!)

I went to the guild forums the next morning to find a WWS from the raid.  They’d knocked out everything from Flame Leviathan through to Auriaya… in only one-shot each!  Holy crap!  Wish I could have been there!

It was incredibly exciting to see that we could move through so quickly and efficiently, since it means we’ll be able to spend at least a full night simply pounding away at new boss.

Tigerfeet wrote a good post about our pacing in Ulduar, actually.

Wednesday night we took out Freya, Hodir and finally got Thorim down for the first time.  I’m really happy with my DPS.  While you can’t really see it from the WWS, on fights where DPS matters, like Thorim, I kicked some hella butt!  Freya, not so much… because I don’t feel the need to pad the damage meters and waste arrows shooting at Freya when there are no adds.  I also am very cautious about damaging the “triplet” adds when they appear, I usually hold back a lot or stop DPS completely if things seem to be going to quickly.

But I showed Thorim and his little ant trails a thing or two!

Thursday night was all about Mimiron.  No trash or anything, just him.

We spent 3.5 hours taking him on and it was amazing.  No, we didn’t get him down in the end… but almost every attempt showed improvement by everyone, and it was really good to see people learn and adapt.  After our first attempt or two, I actually really had my doubts… but our last 3 or 4 attempts all made it to Phase 4, our best making it to 1% but not having enough people remaining to take all 3 parts down at once.

I’m really excited to get back in there next week!

And I don’t want to sound selfish or anything… but I really want at least 1 new piece of gear, it’s been a couple of weeks.  Two pieces of tier dropped even, and I was very sad because I knew they wouldn’t go to me :(   Maybe next time!

More importantly, we’re going to get Mimiron down next week, no questions about it!  BRING ON THE GENERAL!

This Week in Raiding…

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

After nearly 2 weeks away from the raid scene, I got back into the swing of things with Unemployed.  we had a big influx of new recruits, and not only have we got enough to run 25-mans, but we have enough to have people waitlisted!

Tuesday night we did a quick no-tower run through of Flame Leviathan, picking up Heroic: Shutout along the way.  We headed straight to XT-002 for playtime afterwards – no messing about with Ingnis or especially Razorscale, our eternal foe.

Unfortunately Pilsner was attacked by GIGANTIC FLYING ANTS and who took over her computer, forcing her to abandon our raiding to do some Raiding of her own (har har).  But thanks to all those extra people we’ve got, we were able to find a suitable substitute.

After making quick work of XT, we proceeded to Kologarn.  We had some issues… one of our new tanks wasn’t having the best ‘luck’ when trying to pick up the rubble, and they continued to lay the smackdown on our healers.  We swapped in a 4th tank and that seemed to do the job.

Auriaya went down pretty nicely on our second attempt, considering it was our first kill of her on 25-man.  It’s a bit of a hectic fight, lots of running and lots of cats.

It was quite a productive day for Unemployed… although I swear there is absolutely NO Hunter gear in Ulduar-25.  The closest thing that we had drop was some staff, but everything else is Plate or Spell Power (or both!)

Wednesday night was not so productive in terms of number of bosses down, but the attempts we had were progressively better as we went.

We hung out with Freya for the better part of the evening, and a couple of times made it -almost- to the second phase.  I’m sure we would have got it the next attempt if trash hadn’t started respawning.

We spent the last hour or so working on Razorscale.  I swear, if there is one boss we will never get down in Uld-25, it’s HER.  We rarely get more than 15% per ground phase, we just don’t have the pure DPS output needed.  It didn’t help that we were missing a shadow priest at that point, either.  I didn’t feel we made any progress on her that night, to be honest.

Thursday night was almost identical to Wednesday.  Freya attemps, Razorscale attempts.  We managed to get Freya to phase 2 once, but it wasn’t the “easy-mode” everyone claimed it to be, at least not on 25-man.

We tried a ‘new strategy’ onRazorscale.  I didn’t think it would work – and to be perfectly honest, I don’t think it did.  What I said would happen did – if we stick a few people at the back where the adds spawn, they will pull healing/ proximity aggro on everything, not just the Sentinel.

We decided to end the night by taking out VOA-25.  I’d never gotten Emalon down, and I’d only seen Archivon once.  Two emblems each?!  We totally need to do this EVERY WEEK.  It’s like, mandatory.  And not at all difficult.

Here’s hoping next week is better!

Last Week in Raiding…

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Didn’t get around to posting this on Saturday, so it’s a bit late!

We had a couple of no shows last Tuesday, which caused us to be sitting at 23/25 when it was time to get started.  We probably could have gone in and taken out Flame Leviathan with no towers, but we really aren’t ready to go into Ulduar with anything less than a full roster, so we split into 10-mans.  I volunteered to sit out.

I also volunteered to sit on Wednesday, since I felt it was unfair to take someone’s spot when they’d spent all Tuesday night doing the “non-progression” fights that we’d cleared before.

I really didn’t mind sitting out, I was able to relax and play my paladin.  I’ve had a bit of personal stress these last couple of weeks, and I could really use a break.

I don’t want to go into too much detail, but there are some in the raid who are beginning to get all tangled up in my nerves.  Defeatist attitudes are not welcome in my raid.  I don’t need someone to be telling me that we suck, that we’re useless, and that we’ll never get to Yogg Saron.  I just don’t need and can’t handle that right now.

Thursday night we had several people unavailable, so I was brought in to help move on.  I didn’t feel bad this time as I wasn’t taking anyone’s spot, and it was nice to get a little bit of raiding done last week.  When I got in, several bosses were down – the only kill I’d missed that I’d never been a part of was Freya.  I got to help take out Thorim, Hodir, Ignis and Iron Council.

Ignis was a lot of fun! And we ONE-SHOTTED HIM!  On our first guild attempt! (At least I think it was our first… still, impressive!)

I also got to finally figure out why people keep calling it the “crotch pot”.

I got to be on Construct Killer duty, which was great because I got to make things explode!  Unfortunately I screwed up at one point… my crits are almost always over 5k, and since my crit chance is over 52% when raid buffed, it shouldn’t take me more than 2 or 3 hits to grab a 5k crit.  But there was one Construct I just couldn’t seem to get down.  I was getting crits, but they just weren’t doing the job.  Unfortunately I realized just a bit too late that… I was in Viper.  The only way I’m going to get off 5k+ crits in Viper is if I usually do more than 10k :P   Well at least I got it sorted out and dealt with next time around.

I hope I get to fill that role again!  It is always nice to have a resposiblity other than my usual “kill everything, except myself” job.

It was a lot of fun, and I was really happy with who I had in my group.  Raiding is best when you can do it with people you like!

This week I am taking an official break from raiding.  I’ve signed up as available if needed for a couple of the nights, but I’m really hoping to get the time off.  I need to get a lot of things sorted out and reorganized, so I can really buckle down.

This Week in Raiding… Ulduar!

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

This week was our first real week of 3.1 raiding, and it was quite the mixed bag of emotions for me.

On Tuesday we pulled together 25 people and headed in to Ulduar.  We managed to get Flame Leviathan down last week after a few messy starts, so this week the plan was to try it with one tower up.  I got to try out the Chopper this week!  It was fun.  So far I’ve tried everything but driving the Siege Engine… and I don’t know what I like the best!  They’re all pretty fun.

We got Leviathan down really quickly… but it turns out no one actually turned hard mode on, and we didn’t get the achievement.  Oh well!  We’ll try next time.  I did manage to pick up Gloves of the Fiery Behemoth – FINALLY netting me the Epic Achievement!  I had to respec and regem to allow for the loss of hit… but it’s completely worth it.

We hammered away at Razorscale most of the remainder of the night.  We had a couple of good attempts, but the best we did was getting her to about 57% at which point she enraged.  From what I can see, we have two major problems right now:  People are dying in crap, which should NOT be happening.  The solution to that is simple – just don’t do it.  The second issue is that our DPS is not up to par.  We are carrying far too many people.

We’ve got some people who are trying out DPSing for the first time.  Personally, I think Ulduar is not a good place to learn a new role.  Spend some time in a few Heroics first, or at least with a test dummy… but Ulduar isn’t Naxx – we can’t carry 5 DPS doing less than 2k, it’s just not going to get us anywhere.  These people either need to practice, get better gear, or get replaced if we want to make any progress.

XT’s trash?  Ridiculous!  I’ve been told it’s been nerfed since, but we really weren’t expecting it to be so hard, and it kicked our butts thoroughly on Tuesday night.  I got to do some trapping, but it’s difficult to trap a mob that pounces and stuns you!

Wednesday night we went in with another strategy for trash:  we kited them back to Razorscales room and ran around in circles taking them down.  It was messy, but it got the job done.

We didn’t have a full 25 at any point on Wednesday.  That was not a good start to things.  We still haven’t solidified a strategy for Razorscale, and we haven’t gotten her down.  We made some halfhearted attempts at XT, but again, no really solid strategy.

In the end, we split into two 10-man groups.  My group ended up taking down Flame Leviathan, and the other got Orbital Bombardment and a couple of XT’s achievements.

To be honest, I think we should be doing 10-mans regularly.  And I know the gear isn’t AMAZING, but we wouldn’t be doing it for the gear.  What we need is focus and practice.  I’m sure the people who were in the other 10-man and got XT down have a better feel for the fight now, and I wish I could have been there.  If we could all get a chance to try it without the chaos of 25 people running around, I think we’d do a LOT better stepping into 25-man.

But this has been discussed and the leaders have stated that we are a 25-man guild, not a 10-man guild (although I’m sure they didn’t mind getting those achievements and boss kills).

We spent Thursday night in 10-mans again.  I had so much fun, and I learned a lot… in fact, I wrote about it all yesterday.

This Week in Raiding… The Quick and Dedicated Few

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Tuesday night can be pretty much summed up by this achievement:

patchwerk

Patch was our first fight of the evening and we got him down without much effort – with 16 seconds to spare!  It was a good sign, and the rest of the night went equally fast.

In fact, for once we managed to get all four wings cleared in one raid night – we went over our scheduled time by about 10 minutes, but 3 hours is pretty good, I’d say!

I finally picked up Grim Toll.  After much self debate, I decided to trade in my Sphere of Red Dragon’s Blood for Grim Toll, and replace the +16 hit gem in my belt buckle to a +32 AP gem.  it’s a bit of a shuffle around, not a huge DPS increase… but it gives me more room to mess around with my hit.  I’m 9 points over now, so it’s not so bad.  And now I’m just a glove slot away from Epic!

Wednesday we didn’t have a very full roster, so we decided to hit up the last 2 bosses in Naxx and finish getting…

dedicatedfew

We had 2 volunteers sit out, since we actually had 22 people present.

We got our full 22 back together and took out Malygos in 1 shot afterwards!  It was a good couple of days.

Thursday wasn’t so good.  We had only 22 again, but all we had left for the week was Sarth.  Clearly not enough people to bother any 3D attempts… we decided to just do 2 drakes.  It was decided that the tanks needed to be switched up – our add tank and Sarth tank switched places.  I don’t know what the problem was, but we wiped several times.

Personally, I was a bit confused about why we were switching the tanks around in the first place.  We’ve spent the last few months with the same people doing the same roles and getting good at it.  I was told it was because they need to learn to do it.  Alright, I understand if we lose someone, they’ll need to learn to do it.  But that isn’t the case yet!  Why wouldn’t we play to our strengths while we still can?  Then in the event of a major change… we can force ourselves into an evening of wipes.  It just felt very… masochistic.  We didn’t even have a full 25 people to start with.  It just didn’t make sense to me.

We eventually switched back to our normal set up, brought in an extra DPS and switched one DPS for an additional healer.

Afterward we went and had our hand at TK: The Eye again, see if we could pick up another mount.  No luck!  But we did use more of a strategy this time than we did last, which made it less hectic and more interesting!
