Giving Survival Another Shot

December 14th, 2010

Ever since I switched from Beast Mastery to Marksmanship mid-Wrath, I have never looked back.  I enjoyed the complexity of the shot priority and it seemed to all flow very well.  But Cataclysm has changed things.

It’s not that I’m not enjoying MM anymore, but overall I think I’m still trying to get used to the whole focus-management aspect of things.  My timing is often off by a bit, or I get distracted and forget to use Chimera, and it’s having a pretty adverse affect on my dps and my sanity.

So tonight I’m going to give Survival a try.  I tried it once way back, and I did not enjoy it nearly as much as MM… but I feel like there’s no better time to try it than when I’m having issues with my rotation as it is!

  1. SV is much easier than it was in Wrath thanks to Cobra Shot. Rotation is less whack-a-mole. LnL is more awesome than ever as it allows you to regen focus. Youre not going to dump focus as much as other specs; I get maybe 5-8 Arcanes in per fight. And trapping is awesome; triple traps ftw!

  2. I went SV after the big BM nerf toward the end of Naxx, and then went MM halfway through Ulduar (before it was cool) and had been so ever since.

I too was a little dismayed at my post-Cata MM performance, plus wanted the CC of Wyvern Sting, so I gave SV a shot again. It has been phenomenal. DPS is high, the rotation doesn’t feel as strict and you’ve got more AoE when you need it via serpent spread.

The only issue is remembering to reapply Black Arrow and not clipping your L&L procc’ed Explosive Shots or accidentally wasting an L&L proc on a free Arcane shot.

Check with Frostheim at WHU, he’s got all the goods on the new SV.

    Good luck!

  3. Welcome back and congrats on the 85! Get ready for a wild ride because it appears Survival has become *the* spec of Cataclysm.

  4. WHU was and continues to be a significant resource for me in Cataclysm! And I agree, Wyvern Sting and the extra help for AoE is great. Took me a little while to make it feel smooth and not be constantly staring at my action bars constantly, but it’s been well worth it.
