The Interface Blizzard Forgot: Character Management Screens

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Blizzard has a done a lot throughout the years to improve the look and feel of the game.  They’ve incorporated lots of addons into the core game, and it’s almost a whole new feeling compared to the ‘original’.

But you know what they haven’t done anything with?  The character management screens.  The screen you see when you’re selecting your character, or creating a new one.  They could really use some sprucing up, and I have a few ideas I’d like to suggest!

Character Selection Screen

Addon Presets: The idea here is that you’d define addon groups, and be able to load a specific subset of your addons depending on what you’re doing.  For me, I’d like to have things like:

  • Raiding addons
  • Gathering/Auctioning addons
  • Leveling addons

I don’t need to have Auctioneer or Quest Helper running when I’m going to a raid, and I don’t need Omen or Recount when I’m leveling an alt or soloing.  But it’s too much trouble, and too easy to forget to check/uncheck those little boxes before each time I log in.  I’d like to say “Switch me to Raiding mode!” and off I go.

Character List Sorting: When I switch my characters over to my new account, I created my new bank alt before transferring Brajana.  Now and forever more, my bank alt is first on my list of characters.  I’d like to be able to manually switch the order they are displayed, or at least sort them by level or something.

Character Creation Screen

Check Name: I’d like to just check if a name is available.  I don’t want to have to create a character and delete it every time I find an available name.  Just a little button beside the name field would do, thanks.

More camera views: Right now, you can only spin the model of the character you’re creating.  What if you want to know what it will look like from another angle?  What about if you want to zoom in and see it close up?  Sorry, you can’t do that here.

Well, that isn’t too difficult, is it?  Just a few little changes and the front-end of the game will be as up-to-date as the rest.  Get on it, Blizz!

A Quick Brewfest Token-saving Tip!

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Just a quick tip that some people may not know about. If you’re worried about getting enough tokens to afford the clothes, Brew of the Month Club, and the other fun little things you’d like, there is a way to save some tokens!

You can return anything purchased from the token vendor for a FULL REFUND within 2 hours of purchasing!

The key here is to save up enough to buy all 3 clothing items at once, go get smashed and dance in Dalaran, then head back and return them.

Voilà! You just saved 350 tokens.

The Many Mugs of ‘Brewmaster Brajana’!

I’ve already got the title, yes I do!  You know how?  Because I actually worked on them last year, when Achievements were brand spankin’ new, and Wrath wasn’t even on shelves yet.

Why?  Because I love Brewfest!  I think it’s a great event, and always lots of fun.

I’ve built up quite a collection of paraphernalia as well, I might add…

My Wolpertinger, who joined my array of pets back in the very first Brewfest.

My Pint-sized Pink Elekk, newly added companion!

And of course, my ever-growing collection of beer steins… currently consisting of:

I’ve yet to acquire this year’s new charms, and still waiting on the Brewfest Kodo!  (I’ve got the Ram from the first year, when it was super easy to get… muahaha)

Hope you are all going out and getting drunk during this great festival!  CHEERS!

This Week in Raiding… Ghugh Heads to Naxxramas!

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Last night, I finally took the leap and joined a Naxx 10 PUG on my paladin.  It was supposed to be a “badge run”, but it didn’t turn out that way… like most PUGs.

I did realize that I’ve actually never pugged a raid before!  (Other than OS10 +0 and VoA, of course.)  I actually had a lot of fun, and it wasn’t as frustrating as I expected it to be.

We breezed through Patchwerk, but unfortunately… Grobbulus didn’t go so smoothly, and we had to replace several people who follow the “Disconnect after 1 wipe” rule.  Once we brought in some stronger DPS though, we managed to get through.

I picked up 3 upgrades and 2 healing pieces (like I’m ever going to heal!) and made a new friend to PUG with on Dark Iron.  Yay!

But as far as badge run goes… It took us 5 and a half hours to make it through 3 wings, and by the time we started on Military, I was just too tired and antsy.  I don’t like to play for more than about 4 hours, and I’d been online for nearly 8 hours straight… yikes!  Didn’t help that Military is my least favourite wing, too.

It would have been nice to see KT, but there is no way the group we had would be able to 1-shot 4 Horsemen, Sapph or Kel’thuzad, so it’d still take several additional hours… so I called it a night.

Hoping to get more chances to raid on my paladin!

Slacker of the Frozen Wastes!

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Hey there!

Remember me?

It’s been a while… I think this has been the longest break from blogging I’ve taken since I started.  So glad to be back!  Since the end of Blizzcon, I’ve left my job, started back at my last year of University, moved out, been homeless, moved in, been internet-less, been operable-computer-less… it’s been busy.

But I think I’m finally all settled in, and my computer seems to be letting me use it… for now.

What have I been up to in-game?  Well, like I said, I’ve been busy… I think I’ve only played 3 or 4 times total since Blizzcon!

But I have had fun in the little time I did play!

I finally ran Heroic: The Oculus and picked up my [Champion of the Frozen Wastes] title.  I’m only, what, 8 months behind?  Ah well, it was a guild group and I wasn’t the only one who had never been in there, so we took it nice and slow.

Last night I was also able to get back into raiding.  Unemployed is having some problems with our raiding base (more on this next time) and we’re only able to pull together 10-mans for the time being.  To be honest, I don’t mind.  I enjoy 10-mans, they’re a bit more fun and relaxing!  Unfortunately some of my favourite people to play with have either quit the guild, the game, or are taking breaks.

We did regular 10-man ToC yesterday, and cleared it straight from start to finish, one-shotting each boss and having only a couple deaths.  I’d only seen the first 2 bosses, so it was quite exciting for me!  Then we headed to Ulduar for some hard-modes, but without a Shaman, those are harder than they should be. :P

Anyway, that’s just a quick update… more specific updates to come!  Hope you didn’t miss me too much!
