I’ve found we (my coworker plays too) are more … aware … when we’re playing, since we don’t wanna screw up. Although, crazy situations occur: I’m healing, coworkers is tanking, and the phone rings…

Well, glad I’m not the only one that feels that way. I’m stuck in school as well, on year five of my four year degree, since my new school doesn’t like transferring credits… but work is paying for it, so I’ll live with it. Besides, I get to play WoW at work, isn’t that all that matters?

Oh I totally agree with you. The first two years of my program were pretty good, I could see the use of what I was learning, and I was actually building programs and designing things that I could see a purpose in. But the last two years have been dreadful. Everything is too specialized, and none of it is specialized in my particular field. I figured… hm, I’m a web developer. It’s probably a good idea for me to learn how to set up a network.

Next thing you know, I’m learning how to multiply bandwidths and what each bit of a header in every protocol is for.

At this point, the majority of my learning is coming from work experience. If it weren’t for the fact that I’d lose my job if I dropped out, I’d totally be done with school and learning real things!

Personally, I don’t like most the IT degree stuff. IMO, its better to get hands-on and actually do things, not sit in a classroom and discuss the theories behind stuff and terminology. Rather force people to sit down and design and create the database, write the program, animate the graphics, configure and setup a network, etc. — Sorry about the venting, I hate my school. Learned more at home w/ the “community college” then at the four-year degree granting institution I’m at now.

Converting binary huh? Have you started subnetting and supernetting yet? /sarcasm “That’s a blast.”

Don’t worry. I’m only taking databases because it’s required for my degree. While I do work sometimes on databases at work, it’s not something I really enjoy doing or would ever want to focus on!

For the networks… my network course is entirely archaic, we are learning how networks were when they were invented. It’s a ridiculous class which has us flipping bits and converting binary strings on our assignment… in a 3rd year level course. Bah!

“relational database design and token ring network topologies” ??

First off, token ring networks…. icky – thankfully not used much anymore. We have one for some IBM mainframe equipment, which like token ring, needs to die a painful death.

Second, database design? – Please don’t become one of those crazy-ass database people, I work with way to many, and I think most have lost their sense of reality a long time ago…
